Somehow, the Strokes sound more retro here than they did before, with slick production coating everything in a new wave sheen. While they were gone, they cast a long shadow: upstarts like the Postelles and Neon Trees borrowed more than a few pages from their stylebook, and even established acts like Phoenix used the bands strummy guitar pop for their own devices.ĭuring that time, the members of the Strokes pursued side projects that were more or less engaging, but it felt like the band still had unfinished business though First Impressions was ambitious, it didnt feel like a final statement.įor that matter, neither does Angles, which arrived just a few months shy of their classic debut Is This It s tenth anniversary.Ĭlocking in at a svelte 34 minutes, its as short as the bands early albums, but Angles is a different beast. If you found a new record at a store recently for ~$20 with the US cover and "New York City Cops" (even with the same catalog number), it is not this original 2001 pressing and should be listed separately. They didn't press more US vinyl copies for several years (there were just the original ~5,000 floating around), but when they did start re-pressing vinyl copies years later, they kept "New York City Cops" and used the same catalog number/bar code as the 2001 vinyl version.

Per an interview in 2001/2002 with Julian Casablancas (I read it back then and wish I could find it now), about 5,000 copies were pressed before 9/11 with the song "New York City Cops."Īfter 9/11, "New York City Cops" was replaced with "When It Started" on the US CD version. This entry should only be for the rare 2001 version with "New York City Cops" and the US cover.
